What’s The Best Time Of Year To Move?

Best time of year to move

Many of our customers ask us, when’s the best time of year to move? What time of year is the cheapest to move? And when’s the best time to move to Los Angeles?

Whether you’re moving internationally, long distance or locally, here’s what you need to know when planning what time of year to move.

THE BEST TIME TO MOVE TO LOS ANGELES: THE WEATHER

If you’re moving locally in Los Angeles you can take advantage of the fact that the weather is likely to be pleasant all year round. Here’s what you’re looking at in LA.

SPRING

This is our joint pick for the best time of year to move. In Los Angeles it’s unlikely to be more than around 73 degrees in the daytime. So you won’t be too warm getting to know your new neighborhood.

SUMMER

August in LA can get up to a high of around 84 degrees and dry. It’s not as hot as other places but still best to start in the early morning. If you are moving during summer, we especially recommend booking a packing and unpacking service for this reason.

FALL

Along with spring, fall is our other joint pick for the best time of year to move. If you move to or from Los Angeles in fall you’re looking at around 70 degrees in the daytime. It’s perfect comfortable weather for an active day.

WINTER

The mild LA winter averages out at around 68 degrees in the daytime. It can be wet, so check ahead of time in case you need to pack waterproof clothing.

As you will know, not everywhere has mild Los Angeles winters. While a move long distance or internationally to a snowy place is perfectly OK, if you have the choice to avoid it then do so. Why? Snow and ice increase the risk of slips and falls for the moving crew. Vehicles have more chance of issues in very cold weather too.

MOVING ALL YEAR ROUND: HOLIDAYS

SPRING

Generally spring is a great time of year to move.

Just avoid Spring Break so that we won’t run into traffic. Spring Break is also unfortunately a time when there are more careless drivers on the roads, and road accidents. So it’s best if you can plan ahead and avoid moving during this time.

SUMMER

Summer is the most popular time to move. You can enjoy the outdoor space in your new home, and the roads can be clear too when it’s vacation season.

Just steer clear of 4th July if you’re moving with pets. Why? Moving can be stressful for cats and dogs anyway. And the stress of fireworks can make this even worse.

FALL

A great choice as there aren’t many holidays in fall except Labor Day and Veterans Day.

WINTER

While winter can be a good choice for an economical move, you should try to avoid the holidays. Everyone is on the roads and it will add unnecessary hours to moving day.

THE BEST TIME FOR MOVING YOUR BELONGINGS

In the mild weather of spring and fall you won’t have to plan anything in particular for moving your belongings. However summer and winter require a little planning for a perfect move.

SUMMER

You have to treat your belongings with extra care in the summer.  Electronics can’t get too hot or they can malfunction or break down. When in the heat for too long, musical instruments can warp and lose tension too.

WINTER

Likewise, your possessions don’t care for extreme cold either. Any moisture from rain or snow can lead to mold growing on couches, cushions or clothes.

Bearing this in mind, if you’re moving in summer or winter it’s vital to get a good moving company with climate controlled moving trucks like Air1 Moving & Storage.

YOUR NEW HOME IN SUMMER AND WINTER

SUMMER

Moving internationally? Rainy season in places like Japan or southern China are over the summer months. Rain’s not the end of the world, but if you can avoid moving in torrential rain it’s a good move.

Moving to the Mediterranean? In a lot of countries like Spain and Greece, many local businesses totally close down for the summer. So check you can do everything you want in your neighborhood.

WINTER

Say you’re moving to Canada or Chicago in winter. You’ll need to make sure the pipes in your new house are kept warm enough so that they don’t freeze, like the locals do.

Otherwise you’ll risk moving to a new place that you can’t heat. And do you need winter tires on your car? It’s a thing in cold climates.

WHAT IS THE MOST POPULAR MONTH TO MOVE?

There’s not just one month. The whole peak season for moving is between April and September. In fact, only 20% of moves happen outside of this peak time.

Summer is also the time when housing is the most expensive. So it makes sense to buck the trend if you want to get a good deal on a house or apartment.

WHAT TIME OF YEAR IS CHEAPEST TO MOVE?

Generally speaking, moving between late fall to early spring is the cheapest. Just be sure to avoid the holidays. Winter in general is the low season for moving companies.

That means you’ll have more choice and flexibility for moving dates too.

WHICH DAY IS CHEAPEST TO MOVE?

Most people want to plan a move on a Friday so that they have the weekend to settle in to their new home.

So there’s way less competition for slots earlier in the week, and it’s cheaper.
