What To Keep With You On Moving Day

What To Keep With You On Moving Day

Moving day is so exciting. And it’s important not to pack anything you’ll need on the journey in the moving truck. Or anything that you’ll need as soon as you get to your new home.

Air1 Moving & Storage offers a packing and unpacking service, so we know all about what to keep with you on moving day. We’ve seen all too many customers who packed essential items away and then they couldn’t access them for days.

DAILY MEDICINE

This is super important. Check you have anything you take every day, or anything you might need at short notice. Will dust and dirt trigger your allergies, for example? A first aid kit is a great idea, too.

IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS

Like passports, IDs, anything sensitive like bank information or contracts.

A TOOLKIT

You never know when you might need a screwdriver, a hammer, or a pair of pliers. Often in new homes you need to fix something simple on moving day.

SCISSORS

Likewise, you’ll need scissors for opening sealed boxes.

PHONE CHARGERS

Are you making a long distance move? Then you’ll definitely need your phone charger with you.

If your car doesn’t have a charge point, how about taking a portable power bank? They’re cheap and could be a total lifesaver for accessing maps and other information you need.

CLEANING PRODUCTS

So hopefully your new place will be in good shape when you move in. But was there a while between when the previous owners or tenants moved out and when you’re moving in? Then it’s likely to have gotten a little dusty.

Pack the following and you can’t go wrong.

  • Brooms

  • Dustpans

  • General cleaning spray

  • Rags or paper towels

Bonus points if the general cleaning spray doubles up as a glass cleaning spray.

And here’s where it pays to choose a good moving service. The Air1 Moving & Storage team always clean up after themselves! All those journeys to and from the moving truck mean the floors can get a little dirty. But we lay down tarps and leave your floors looking great.

YOUR ANTI COVID-19 ARSENAL

When we’re moving these days we need to keep everyone protected. So pack your usual supply of disinfectant and other COVID fighting supplies.

Then if the new neighbors arrive unexpectedly you can be confident about greeting them safely. After all, you wouldn’t want to miss out on any potential cake or cookies they might have brought.

WASHBAGS

You know the drill. Toothbrushes, toothpaste, face wash, shower gel, yada yada yada.

And let’s not forget toilet paper.

CLEAN SHEETS

That fit the beds in your new place. And nightclothes to wear in bed.

CLEAN TOWELS

Moving day can be tiring, as well as dusty and energetic. So plan a relaxing shower or bath when you arrive. That way you can clean up and wind down.

TRASH BAGS

They’ll come in handy, we promise. Moves always generate more trash than you think, especially with all the tape and packing materials.

CLOTHES FOR A COUPLE MORE DAYS

Just in case there was an emergency. Moving can be a sweaty business, too. You’ll definitely want to change into nice fresh clothes for your first day in your new home.

FOOD

What time of day are you planning to arrive at the new place? You’ll probably want to eat. So choose something easy to prepare. You won’t want to cook much, or even at all. Fast and satisfying food that travels well is the best.

What utensils will there be? If the answer is “none”, consider bringing a mini kit of plates, mugs and cutlery.

Bring a small amount of dish soap and a sponge too, or dishwasher tablets so you can wash up afterwards.

And how about breakfast the next day? Something similarly fast and quick to prepare will get you off to a good start. Just don’t forget the coffee.

WHEN’S YOUR FURNITURE ARRIVING?

If you’re moving a long way you may be without your furniture for a while. So could you pack some folding chairs as an alternative? Because sitting on the floor for days would be a real drag.

MOVING WITH A DOG OR OTHER PET?

So dog food, and dog bowls for food and water go on the list too. How are you transporting your pet? Does he or she need a carry box? How about a leash for the new place?

Then remember their medicine, and familiar toys so they feel safe. You should keep their microchip details on you just in case. After all, pets can feel disoriented in new homes at the beginning.

When you hire a great moving company like Air1 Moving & Storage there’s no hanging around, which can be stressful for pets. And their humans.

MOVING WITH KIDS

First things first. Are you moving long distance, or moving locally? If it’s the latter then moving day could be simpler with the kids elsewhere. If they’re not at school, then with a trusted friend or relative.

Make sure they have plenty of entertainment for the trip. And when you get to the new place, will there be internet straight away? If not, plan some books or other low-tech entertainment.

PLANNING A MOVE BY PLANE

If you’re moving internationally or just long distance, you may need to plan for longer before you’re reunited with your belongings.

Check that your liquids comply with size requirements, and that anything you want to bring is allowed on the plane.

When you’re moving by plane you’ll need earplugs and some comfortable clothes if you’re flying long haul.
